“Inspired by the great salumerias of Rome, tapas bars of Barcelona, and sidewalk cafes of Paris, Suprema Provisions offers a selection of small plates, pristine oysters, savory entrées, and salumi and cheese boards, along with a fine wine and cocktail program crafted by renowned sommelier Joshua Wesson.”

Joshua Wesson always seems to have had a great sense of what New Yorkers want, and when they want it.

The one-time sommelier and founder of Best Cellars — which revolutionized wine retailing with its user-friendly-under-$15 focus — and co-author of the bestselling classic Red Wine With Fish seems to be hitting the nail on the head yet again by opening Suprema Provisions, which Sierra Tishgart of characterized as “a teeny-tiny Eataly.”

Well, yeah.  Exactly.

It’s been on our must-visit list since its opening a few months ago, and this week we were finally able to pop in for a bite and a glass of wine to check it out.  We landed a primo sidewalk-adjacent table — inside, yet with an open-air view of Seventh Avenue, not to mention a drag queen or two from the bar next door taking drags of their own off their cigarettes.

Impeccably chosen, well-priced wines?  Check.  We’ve loved Lambrusco even more since Joe Bastianich described it to us a decade ago as “red wine with panties” — and the Villa di CorloPrimevo” Lambrusco di Sorbara that Suprema is pouring is a fine example of the genre.

Simple yet delicious bites to accompany them?  Check. Witness Suprema’s excellent wild mushroom toast and not-to-be-missed Caesar salad.

Restaurant world insiders stopping by to check it out?  Check.  The other night, Josh introduced us to Bonnie Munshin, whom The New York Times reported in 2013 had been deemed “the most powerful person in the Hamptons” by no less an authority than the Barefoot Contessa herself. We were also happy to meet Josh’s partner Stephen Werther, the entrepreneur behind Anthony Bourdain‘s forthcoming Bourdain Market in Manhattan.

Make time to browse the provisions at Suprema

While Suprema’s storefront half is considerably more modest than those hugely ambitious plans for Pier 57, it’s definitely worth a browse to check out the expertly-curated selection of kitchen tools, books, pastas, condiments, artisan chocolates, and other delicacies.

We’ve been telling friends about Wesson, whom we first had the great pleasure of meeting at an event in Texas and then interviewing for our book WHAT TO DRINK WITH WHAT YOU EAT, for ages.  Now we’re finding ourselves telling friends about Suprema Provisions.  It’s exactly the kind of place anyone looking to meet up for a drink and bite in Greenwich Village will want to know about this summer.

Suprema Provisions is at 305 Bleecker Street (at Seventh Avenue), in Greenwich Village.  646.964.4994.
